How you view your screens can have a major effect on how well you work every day. The number of monitors and how you display them can help take your productivity to the next level.
If you’ve ever felt claustrophobic while working on your computer, or if you’ve ever felt like your monitors take up too much physical workspace on your desk, then keep reading for our recommendations on how you can increase your screen space and efficiency.
Two Screens Are Better Than One
A Wichita State University study found that users who paired a laptop with a second monitor showed a marked increase in completing jobs quicker and more accurately. One of the main reasons cited for the increased work productivity was the need to switch between windows less frequently. Dual monitor users switch windows 15% less frequently than single monitor users.
A 15% decrease in switching windows could mean an additional five to ten minutes saved per task, which adds up quickly. Not having enough screen space (also known as screen real estate) can be a major productivity killer. When you introduce more screen real estate to your workspace, it helps provide a more conducive work environment. This helps the end-user by keep things organized and allows them to see more open windows and tasks at the same time.
A popular case for multiple screens is to have one screen dedicated to a particular app or window that gets use every day, such as Outlook. Many users find it useful to have an application like Outlook open on one screen, and a different set of applications or windows open on the other screen.
All modern-day computers running Windows 10 or above, or an up-to-date Mac OS computer, have the built-in ability to support two or more monitors. Many modern workstations can even support three or four monitors. With additional hardware and software support, it is possible to go beyond four monitors.
There are also displays that are designed to have Ultra-Wide variants. These screens may be 34-inches wide and may be useful in situations where desk space may not allow for multiple monitors. However, some find the change in aspect-ratio when working with an Ultra-Wide monitor too jarring, and difficult to work with. It’s also not as efficient as working with two separate monitors when organizing windows and workspace.
Mounting Your Monitors
If desk space is restrictive then it may be a good idea to mount your monitors as opposed to standing them on your limited desk space. There are several methods to mounting your monitors, and it’s a great way to increase the usable space on your physical desk.
Many monitors include mounting screws on the back so they can be fitted to a VESA mount. A VESA mount is a bracket which can be installed directly onto a wall or surface. The VESA mount holds the monitor on the surface so that you can avoid using the monitor stand.
You can also use a desk mount with multiple arms to hold your screens up for you. These mounts will use a clamp to hold onto the edge of your desk, and includes arms that you can mount your monitors to. This is an even better solution than using a wall mount as it gives more flexibility to adjust your monitors while keeping them above your desk. Some variants of these monitor arms include cable management keep the cables clean and organized.
