If you’ve ever been in an area where your signal isn’t what it needs to be, and finding an available Hotspot would be a better option, Facebook has an app for that.

Facebook has created a new way to find public WiFi offered by businesses that offer free WiFi to customers, and lists them on a map.  The feature also provides details about the business like what they do, operating hours, and where they are located.  The downside is that this feature only works on companies that report they have open WiFi on their Facebook page.

Facebook Engineer, Alex Himel wrights on his blog “We launched Find Wi-Fi in a handful of countries last year and found it’s not only helpful for people who are traveling or on-the-go, but especially useful in areas where cellular data is scarce”.

“Find Wi-Fi helps you locate available Wi-Fi hot spots nearby that businesses have shared with Facebook from their Page. So wherever you are, you can easily map the closest connections when your data connection is weak.”

Another benefit of the Find WiFi Facebook update is that you can verify Public WiFi hotspots through the app by checking their Facebook page.  If the Facebook page is a verified Facebook business, then you can know if your connecting to the business pubic WiFi, and not a rogue WiFi signal merely copying them.  This can help you keeping your information secure.

Although you should always be careful whenever connecting to any open and public hotspot.  Any company offering public WiFi may have lax security standards, which means anyone using their network could be vulnerable.

You can receive this update through your phones app store if you are using Android or Apple mobile devices.
